We are all addicted to something, almost everyone and everywhere. Isn’t true freedom being addicted to nothing and being without burden of duty? Even the pleasures of life dull when they are experienced too often.

we are definitely all addicted to something - feelings, thoughts and beliefs about ourselves and others, work, school, alcohol. I think true freedom is never ceasing to develop within yourself, to constantly feel capable and willing to change, to be able to change the way you think, feel, etc. when you don't like the current situation - internally or externally. I think we impose duty on ourselves, usually it is a necessity to bring some kind of order, structure, welfare to our lives, but I don't think it has to reduce our freedom.

yeah self imposed duty is fine because you are still free. Duty imposed by another is artificial - although one possible exception to this i've thought recently is in education, where children have no idea (and can't conceive of) how much they will value the basic skills they are forced to practice. In the absolute sense, who's to say that anything we force anyone to do is really necessary, but practically, we do people a service by giving them skills they will use daily to their advantage.
